Serie A team of the decade: Andrea Pirlo 'emblematic' of the 2010s – Gab Marcotti | ESPN FC

ESPN FC’s Gab Marcotti and Matteo Bonetti make the case for their respective teams of the decade in Serie A. Both have the same front three and goalkeeper but have some disagreements in between, including the player of the decade.

Gab’s team: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus); Senad Lulic (Lazio), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli), Christian Maggio (Napoli); Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan and Juventus), Radja Nainggolan (Cagliari, AS Roma and Inter Milan), Miralem Pjanic (Roma and Juventus); Mauro Icardi (Sampdoria and Inter), Gonzalo Higuain (Napoli, Juventus and Milan), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese)

Matteo’s team: Buffon; Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus and Milan), Koulibaly; Marek Hamsik (Napoli), Nainggolan, Pirlo, Paulo Dybala (Palermo and Juventus); Di Natale, Icardi, Higuain

  1. Such a bad argument, Inter in 2010 was a pretty old team which materialized in no time. Sneijder was injured after that and then they kicked him out to Galatasaray because his wage was too high. Etoo played one superb season and then went to Russia. Milito was already quite old and played not long enough on a top level to get to the team of the decade. Same with Cambiasso, Stankovic, Maicon, Cesar and if we're talking about Zanetti: The decade before, yes he belongs into this team. But not this decade where he was old and retiring soon.

  2. I agree with Gab. That Inter team has to count for the previous decade. This decade is 2010/2011-2019/2020. That's 10 years. That Inter was 2009/2010. Otherwise, we're including Inter based on the last 6 months of 2010. That's just pointless. How can you include players in a 10 year ranking based on 6 months of performances? That's the first 20 games of the 500+ played over a decade. Otherwise we might as well have Ibrahimovic, Maicon, Benatia, Ronaldo, Thiago Silva, Kolarov… when we're talking about a decade, you're looking for quality and CONSISTENCY over the 10 years within that league. The only player I'd say Gab missed out (although possibly due to lack of space) is Daniele De Rossi who was crucial in Roma coming top 3 for 5 years (half the decade) and in Roma being the only team, apart from Juve, to get to a Champions League semi final this decade (considering, like I said, Inter were a 2009/2010 team). If a player is the best in the league for the first 2 games of the season and then disappears, do we put him in team of the season after not seeing him since September? No. A good question to add to this, however, is who is the best Serie A coach of the past decade?

  3. Hamsik, Lavezzi, and Cavani made the Serie A watchable again when the competitiveness of the league was on the floor. 1 or 2 of them need to be in there no doubt.

  4. I hate Gab and his technicalities. I wanted to believe 2010 was this decade and that this decade ended at the start of 2020, but gosh darnit he's right
