Report: Liverpool must pay £60m to sign award-winning 22-year-old, Real Madrid ready to back out
AS Monaco have set their asking price for Liverpool target Aurélien Tchouaméni, according to reports. This won’t be a cheap transfer.
This comes from AS. They claim that AS Monaco have put a €70m price tag on Aurélien Tchouaméni – roughly £60m. It’s a figure that shows how highly they rate the 22-year-old after two fantastic years as a key player for the club.
His form has brought about quite a lot of interest, too. AS name Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Juventus as potential suitors, with Real topping the list. However, they don’t like that £60m price.
That, says AS, is a price Real prefer to pay for strikers, not midfielders. Their big hope is to drive Tchouaméni’s price down by £15m to £20m. Only then could they justify signing the Frenchman.
Tchouaméni’s talent is absolutely worth that price and £60m could be a wonderful deal for any club looking to invest in a young midfielder. You won’t find any better, in fact, if you specifically want a defensive player.
The question for Liverpool, then, is how much they need that. Tchouaméni’s natural position for the Reds would be in the holding role but Fabinho doesn’t exactly need replacing. Would the Frenchman actually start regularly? We’re not entirely sure.
Down the line, he absolutely would but Liverpool would need to change their system slightly to incorporate another defence-first midfielder. If they wanted to play both Fabinho and Tchouaméni regularly, that is.
Perhaps this is solely a long-term squad move, though. Signing the Frenchman, who won Ligue 1’s Young Player of the Year award last season, would certainly give Liverpool an incredibly strong squad. Is that worth £60m this summer? Liverpool perhaps think so, while the likes of Real don’t quite see the benefit.
