Manchester United Can Sign Leipzig Star for €75m: The Perfect Addition To Ten Hag’s Front-line?

Recent reports from German media outlet BILD suggest that Manchester United are keen on signing RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku in the upcoming transfer window as Erik Ten Hag looks set to add to his option in the middle of the park.

However, Leipzig chiefs want the France international to sign a contract extension which would see him earn almost thrice as much as he does now (8 million Euros from 3 million Euros). Besides, it would include a release clause which will allow him to leave in 2023 for a fee in the region of 65 million Euros. As far as the next transfer window is concerned, only offers greater than 75 million euros will be considered by the club. Paris Saint-Germain are also keen on securing his services.

Having come through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain, Christopher Nkunku signed for RB Leipzig in the summer of 2019 for a fee in the region of €15 million. Over the course of the last three seasons, the France international has made 132 appearances for The Red Bulls, bagging 47 goals and netting 43 assists across all competitions.

The 24-year-old attacker has been Leipzig’s go-to man for goals this season, netting 31 goals and registering 14 assists in 50 outings across all competitions.

Besides, he has managed to put up some awe-inspiring numbers on the board this term – averaging 2.3 shots, 1.9 key passes, 1.9 dribbles, and 0.5 crosses per 90 minutes in the German top flight. Furthermore, with an average WhoScored rating of 7.61, he has been one of the best players on his side this season. Capable of playing anywhere across the frontline, in the midfield, and down the flanks, versatility is one of the Frenchman’s key strengths.

Marcus Rashford has been in terrible form over the past few months, whereas it’s highly likely that Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard will depart the club in the summer. Juan Mata’s contract expires at the end of the season, while Mason Greenwood remains suspended until further notice after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.

Given the circumstances, Manchester United need some fresh recruitments in the attacking department if they intend to strengthen the present squad – and Nkunku fits the bill perfectly. At 24, he has won multiple domestic trophies with Parisians and will add much-needed depth and experience to the United squad. Hence, the board should try and get this deal over the line in the coming months.
