Four years waiting, 19-year-old is deemed the next Mane; he's finnaly to signing Anfield move

Liverpool boast one of the best front lines in world football, in terms of quality and strength in depth.

Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino continue to shine for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Likewise, Diogo Jota has been sensational for Liverpool, and much is expected of newcomer Luis Diaz.

Admittedly, Mane and Diaz play in the same position, on the left side of attack.

However, Mane can also play on the right-hand side and as a second striker.

And if Liverpool were looking for a successor to the Senegal star, they could look at Jeremy Doku.

Four years ago, Doku and his family visited the Reds’ facilities amid a flurry of interest from elite clubs.

Last year, the 19-year-old spoke of his time visiting Liverpool.

“I was going to be 16 and that was the age you can sign a pro contract. A lot of teams came to see me,” Doku told Ouest-France, via the Liverpool Echo.

“Everyone talks about Liverpool because it was the most concrete interest but there was also Arsenal and Chelsea.”

He added: “I was able to discuss with Jurgen, Mane, Wijnaldum… Gerrard too. I talked a lot with Mane but we didn’t really talk about football.

“We talked about everything. He told me that I was young, that I still had time, he wasn’t trying to convince me or to say to me ‘come here, you will succeed’.”

“How we were received there!”

The Echo also quotes Doku’s father, David, as telling Het Nieuwsblad that his personal preference was Liverpool.

“At the age of 16, Jeremy could sign a pro contract with Anderlecht,” he said.

“But even then Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Ajax and PSV were interested.

“We then visited clubs like Liverpool and Ajax, but Stellar Group left us the choice.

“My preference was Liverpool. How we were received there, damn!”

In the end, Doku opted to remain with Anderlecht, making his breakthrough at the Belgian club.

And in 2020, he moved to French outfit Rennes for a reported £23.4million fee.

Doku has certainly made the right choices, as he’s now a regular for club and country.

FourFourTwo has now published their list of the top 50 teenagers in world football, and the one-time Liverpool target is 16th.

“Belgian winger Doku impressed in Ligue 1 in his first season after Rennes paid upwards of £20m for his services,” they wrote.

“And after an unexpected showing at Euro 2020, he’s now pretty much the heir to the aching Eden Hazard.

“What really raises the pulse about the youngster is his ability to stop to a standstill before accelerating past his man.

“Though his strength, low centre of gravity and rocket of a right foot will put you in mind of Sadio Mane.

“He’s still so very young and will only grow from here.”

“If they like me, they’ll come back”

Doku has made no secret of the fact he’s still open to a move to Liverpool.

He told Ouest-France: “I know what my trajectory had to be.

“I know what route I needed to take and I knew at that moment I needed to stay at Anderlecht.

“As soon as I’m asked if I regret it, I always say no.

“Because if Liverpool came to me at 15, if they like me, they’ll come back later, that’s certain. It’s up to me to be playing well.”

And last year, Doku expressed his desire to move to the Premier League, in conversation with RTBF.

“I want to do everything to become one of the best players in the world, at one of the biggest clubs in the world, in the English Premier League if possible.

“And I am working hard for that.”
